With Lyon for a name, it’s no surprise I would lean toward African animals, but, in truth, I made my first Lion quilt long before I met my husband.  AND I quilted it on my sewing machine! (Maybe it was a sign.)  I come from a long line of quilters so I grew up playing under quilts stretched out in the front room.  Even though I learned to hand quilt, even as early as high school age I was busy and looking for faster ways to accomplish my goals.  I guess all of us “Machine Quilters” are that way.  Aren’t we?

WHAT MAKES THIS QUILT UNIQUE?

Okay, but What is a Pictogram?

The great MeadowLyon Adventure began when we returned from living in Malaysia where Monkeys would sit on our shoulders at the park or steal our lunches. My son would lie on the floor pouring over animal books.  So I decided to make him a Rainforest Quilt to help him remember that wonderful adventure. I pieced it with tropical fabric and as I got deeper under the canopy used darker fabrics with bigger animals.  Finally I turned the trees upside down and pieced the lower ones with fish fabric.  Then I asked my friend Angela to quilt it for me – and put in birds and animals.  She said she’d be glad to quilt it, but I’d have to draw the pattern.  So I did.  I didn’t know it could repeat so I made it all different.  It became the basis for our first 4 “Pictograms.”  “Rainforest,” “Jungle,” Safari,” and “Fishy Business.” They were highly pictorial – almost a “Whole Cloth” pattern yet on an easy to use 12 ft. roll. Read more about Pictograms here.

Take a LOOK! How many animals, plants or landmarks can you spot in this quilt. See the full list on the Southwest Vistas page.

“When I was a child, our family built a desert cabin in the high desert of California just outside Joshua Tree National Park. The boulders of Rattlesnake Hill behind the house were my playground.  Later as a college student I went with friends to explore rock formations of several western states.   I was at home on the desert rocks.  Recently when someone suggested I do a Southwest pattern I leaped right in.  It was fun remembering climbing on boulders, feeling the wind and chasing the jackrabbits.  Of course, there were plenty of giant Joshua trees and snakes, too. The adventure turned my thoughts to the fun times of my childhood. I drew all those memories into my “Southwest Vistas” pattern.  “Campout” and “Backwoods” are two other patterns that take me back to those happy-go-lucky days.  Didn’t you ever go camping as a child? Did your Dad make you sit in the boat for hours to catch fish?  With book in hand, it seemed like forever. That was tedious, but it’s fun to remember now. Re-discover such memories when you stitch pictorial Pictograms on your quilt!”

Here’s a complete list of all our Pictograms. Search by name HERE.

When you go to each post you’ll see closeups and the special BORDERS planned to compliment them.

Often as I sat drawing patterns I would imagine the quilt I would make on which to stitch them. Although this is not my main focus, I’ve published a few that you might use. Some are FREE, some are full sized and some are normal patterns.

If you know me, you won’t be surprised that I also came up with recipes for some of them. Guess which Pictogram they match!

Have fun planning your next Pictogram quilt!

Chintz & India Borders and Corners

YES, TWO PATTERNS IN ONE!

These unique border patterns with South Asian Elegance will add a decorative finish to your quilts.
“Chintz Border” is the companion piece to MeadowLyon’s Interlocking “Chintz” pantograph. The inner border measures 4.5-inches and the complete border with both edgings measures 7-inches.
“India border” measures 6-inches wide and matches the Indian Pantograph.

Chintz (from the plural of chint) was originally glazed calico textile, specifically those imported from India, printed with designs featuring flowers and other patterns in different colors, typically on a light, plain background. In India, these fabrics were known as cint in Hindi, a word derived from the Sanskrit word citra, which means “variegated.” One major center of production for these fabrics was Calicut, which loans its name to “calico.”

Zebra Stripes 10″ Edge to Edge Pantograph

MeadowLyon has several other patterns which could coordinate well: Safari Pictogram 11″, Safari Border/Pictogram 6″, Safari Blocks, & Nature Blocks on Point.

African Maze 11″ Edge to Edge Pantograph

Africa brings rich images to mind.  The savannah or the jungle with wandering herds or groups of distinctive animals.  I’ve tried to include the most familiar and expected motifs in this interesting pattern.  10″ x 144″

Cactus Flower 2 rows 6.5 Interlocking

This pretty pattern has 2 rows of 6.5 inches.  It’s so easy to adjust for the length of your quilt with these smaller double rows.  There’s also a little Cactus Wren for you to insert as desired.  It’s included on the pattern roll.

I can just picture that wonderful “hot” fushia color of cactus flowers.  No wonder Mexican art is so bright and vivid.  They’re inspired by the bright colors of the desert flowers.  Watch out! Don’t touch those prickly little needles.

Here’s a picture of how it’s coming along – to be finished this month!!!!  I’m tired of UFOs!

Poinsettia Fantasia 6″ or 10′ Interlocking

It’s always nice to have a lovely Christmas pattern for that last minute quilt.   You’ll find this interlocking 2 rows of 6″ easy and fast moving.  It’s easy to adjust for the size of your quilt.

BUT, Poinsettia Fantasia now comes in a BIG 10 inch size.  It’s a single interlocking row.  Bigger means faster quilting! (We don’t keep many of these in stock, if it is all out, just let us know and we will special order it for you.)

Java Batik Border 5″ Border Pattern 5″ Edge-to-Edge

What a lovely batik border.  It reminds me of so many truly oriental batiks.  Use these 2 patterns as borders or even for Edge 2 Edge quilting.

You might pair them with the new Java Batik Floral 10″ Edge 2 Edge.  Watch for some blocks on the same theme.

Tonight a friend of mine from Indonesia came over and I showed her my new pattern.  “Oh, the name of this flower in Java is Kembang Kenanga,” she exclaimed.   How fun to know the real name and that it was recognizable!  (It translates to Kenanga Flower.  In Bali it is called Padma.  Yes, all you Star Wars Fans – Padma was not a new name.)

I couldn’t resist purchasing lots of Thai quilts and quilted bags!  We’ll find quilt pattern ideas in the mosaics of the Grand Palace, and enjoying Chinese New Year. And in slides we’ll visit some markets and weavers. I always have to talk fast so as not to leave anything out. Don’t miss a minute!

Laguna de Cancun 5″ Edge-to-Edge

Laguna de Cancun 5″ roll pattern with 2″ Mayan Wave sashing

Laguna de Cancun comes from the Izapa Stele #25 with addition of a fish design from a pottery artifact and a turtle from Mayan hieroglyphs. Just like hotel murals on the Mayan Riviera, these stylized fish swim directly out of the Izapa Stele #25. Even the waves are part of the original design chiseled hundreds of years ago in Central America. Inspiration from a long pottery fish and hieroglyph turtle add variety to this easy pattern.

With Laguna de Cancun comes Mayan Wave, a flowing textile design found on painted vases and architectural trim of the period.

20 Blocks on Point (orig.Corners for the Nature Series Borders)

Quilter’s love finding blocks already drawn to fit “On Point.”

Although originally drawn as CORNERS for  the Nature Series 6″ border patterns: Rainforest, Fishy Business, Safari, Jungle, and Downunder, they are frequently used for blocks. This package contains 20 different corners or blocks, 4 for each theme!

When the paper copies of this pattern are out of stock, you can save money by downloading the very same blocks in 20 Blocks on Point PDF Set.

Additions to the Nature Series Border Patterns

These little patterns are extensions (3″, 6″, and 9″ long) for the border patterns Rainforest, Fishy Business, Safari, Jungle, and Down Under. They are designed to assist you in lengthening your border, if the need should arise.  The border patterns come in 36″ increments. Or they can be all put together to create a 5th panel.

Portico Blooms 4 1/2″ Edge-to-Edge

2 Rows of 4 inch stitching make this pattern perfect for short-arm or domestic machines.  Isn’t it great that 2 little rows make a big design?

Portico Blooms is a stylized flower found in Mayan textile decoration, Mayan hieroglyphs, and also as painted architectural décor on Aztec porches.

While we imagine bougainvillea spilling over the porch roofs in Central America, the ancient artisans painted these blooms along the pillars of these very porches and in their architectural murals. Although the design is hundreds of years old it complements bright modern piecing.

Ming Sea 6″ Border Pattern

Ming Sea is part of the Chinese Porcelain Series and designed to compliment the Oriental designs.  Included are Ming Sea  6″ with two types of corners.  Also, on the same roll is a delightful oriental cloud design called Mandarin Wind 4″  which can be used as Edge to Edge for a short-arm machine.

The design for Ming Sea was derived from the porcelain border on a plate of the Ming Dynasty.  It looks in place with our other Chinese patterns as shown here.

Ming Sea also looks great as a border with the Dragon patterns.  I’ve posted a layout suggestion here, using: Dragon Riders  #1713-11;  Dragons Galore  #1600-11;  Dragon Sky  #1601-11; Dancing Princesses-Castle Fantasy;  Samurai blocks   – by special request;  Ming Sea  #1507-6.

Also,  I’ve attached a layout for using Ming Sea as as E2E which was developed by Page Johnson of www.thequiltingpage.com

Jungle Foliage 6″ Border Pattern

Several years ago I decided to make a quilt for an Indonesian friend.  (See the whole story on the link to Indonesian Puppets)  I decided to draw a 6″ pattern of foliage to separate the rows of puppets from each other.  Since then I’ve used it for many things including 3 additional Indonesian puppet quilts.  It also works well with both the Rainforest 11″  pictogram and Jungle 11″ pictogram.  When I need just a little more to fill out a quilt, I use this very versatile 6″ pattern.  It also works well as an Edge to Edge for mid-arm machines and is great for a simple border.

In the Doghouse 6″ Pictogram

In the Doghouse 6″ border pattern with accompanying sashing patterns: Dog Bones 2″ and Pawprints 2 1/2″  It can serve as a border for the Dawgs pictogram or can be used as E2E to cover an entire quilt.

This pattern is 6″ wide with no repeats.

The distinctive feature of a Pictogram is that it’s a pantograph with NO repeats.  It’s a complete 12′ roll comprised of 4 panels of 3′ each, all “hooked” together. I’ve added a dotted line at each 36″ section. While they can be stacked up as shown in the picture, they can also be quilted like an E2E or B2B giving lots of pictorial subject matter to your quilt.  See how I used it here:  https://youtu.be/xFS3GfNbOmk

To avoid placing an animal or image on top of itself all the way down the quilt I recommend starting at a different 36″ division for each “pass.” After starting, continue quilting through as many sections as needed for that row. You won’t have to stop – the line is continuous. For a full sized quilt I might make 7-8 rows, starting at various sections of the panto.

For alignment help see the “Tips” section.
