These 2 small borders or sashings will come in handy for tight spots and narrow borders. The larger of the two is 4.5″ and the smaller 3″. They were inspired by art work of the Sung Dynasty.
Explore both attached layouts for quilting ideas. My friend Julie Lucht in Alaska made this beautiful example. (She buys ALL our patterns!)
The most common Chinese ways of saying Happy New Year are Gong Xi Fa Cai(Mandarin) and Gong Hey Fat Choy (Cantonese). Even though the pronunciations are a little different, both are written the same.
Ever since I was young I have been fascinated by the Far East. I used to go with my Mother to visit “artsy” Lila L. She had her hair bound up with chopsticks and black lacquered furniture inlaid with Mother of Pearl. Chinatown was my favorite place to eat and I loved getting those prize balls at the gift shop and unwrapping yards of paper strips to find the tiny toys inside.
Little did I know I would “marry” into the army and live in the Orient. This amazing experience has increased my delight in all those memories and many new ones; like the Chinese Lion dance (always thought I’d draw this but haven’t yet!) , Sizzling Rice Soup and playing the Kayagum (like Koto). Subsequently I’ve drawn a number of popular Chinese inspired patterns. I’ll include Japan and Indonesia too! So for the New Year I’m passing along the celebration to you!
Get a copy of the CHINESE MEDALLION SET – FREE with purchase of any Oriental pattern.
This is one of the most beautiful and popular series we’ve designed. The patterns look lovely on any quilt – not necessarily Oriental. They include: Chinese Porcelain 12″ with 1.5″ beading and Corner (this can be used as an ornate border or E2E), Chinese Medallion Set (12-15″ block and P2P triangles), Chinese Scroll 4.5″ Borders and Chinese Mums 4.5″ borders.
Attached is a sample layout you might try. The matching borders are Chinese Scroll w/Chinese Curl and Chinese Mums. In fact, you can get them all in the Chinese Porcelain Set set for 20% off.
Do you love this beautiful blue appliquéd sample? Angela Meadows made it from a very shiny knit, fused it and straight stitched the edges. Someday we’ll finish the entire quilt!
Chinese Porcelain 12″ with 1 3/4″ Porcelain Beading sashing.
This Chinese Porcelain Design was inspired by a vase of the Sung Dynasty. (Thanks to my Oriental art history book from college.) The design is equally enjoyable stitched vertically or horizontally. If you’re doing an Edge to Edge arrangement you can leave out the little beading that is planned for a border. Just roll and repeat this pattern, but if you desire to offset it I like it shifted 12 inches.
This pattern also makes an elegant wide border.
I’ve always loved oriental things. Chinese food and Chinatown in LA were among my favorites. Remember those little “prize balls” with the gold seal and colored bands around them. You could unwind the long strips of tissue to reveal trinkets, fortunes and the like. Now after living in Asia my craving for the beauties of the Orient have not been satisfied, they have increased.
I made two wall-hanging with this pattern. One shows the corner as stitched in 1/4 of the Chinese Porcelain Quilt. The other picture shows how I adapted the panto for applique on the Chinese Brocade Quilt.
This lovely pattern set is made to coordinate with the Chinese Porcelain 12″ pattern. This block can be 12″ or 15″, and has 10″ and 12″ triangles included.
Chinese Scroll 4 1/2″ with 2 1/2″ Chinese Curl sashing. This design is both elegant and simple. I guess the two often go hand in hand.
Although it’s part of the Chinese Porcelain series, it would be beautiful as a border with many other designs. This pattern is also available as a PDF download.
If you like Oriental and you like Clamshell quilts, you’ll definitely like this fun set of Oriental/Chinese images to stitch into your next quilt. Make it with silk and/or batiks for that Asian glow.
Each design is sized to fit into an 8-inch “Clammy” block. Of course you can resize them if desired. There are 12 designs so you can mix them up for variety.
These unique border patterns with South Asian Elegance will add a decorative finish to your quilts. “Chintz Border” is the companion piece to MeadowLyon’s Interlocking “Chintz” pantograph. The inner border measures 4.5-inches and the complete border with both edgings measures 7-inches. “India border” measures 6-inches wide and matches the Indian Pantograph.
Chintz (from the plural of chint) was originally glazed calico textile, specifically those imported from India, printed with designs featuring flowers and other patterns in different colors, typically on a light, plain background. In India, these fabrics were known as cint in Hindi, a word derived from the Sanskrit word citra, which means “variegated.” One major center of production for these fabrics was Calicut, which loans its name to “calico.”
This pretty pattern has 2 rows of 6.5 inches. It’s so easy to adjust for the length of your quilt with these smaller double rows. There’s also a little Cactus Wren for you to insert as desired. It’s included on the pattern roll.
I can just picture that wonderful “hot” fushia color of cactus flowers. No wonder Mexican art is so bright and vivid. They’re inspired by the bright colors of the desert flowers. Watch out! Don’t touch those prickly little needles.
Here’s a picture of how it’s coming along – to be finished this month!!!! I’m tired of UFOs!
You can buy this printing of the little sashing that corresponds with the Fairy Blossom pictogram. It’s useful for adjusting the “fit” of the pattern and makes a great sashing for many uses.
Another Interlocking Tulip? Yes! This pattern is a versatile one you’ll love The tulips can march around a quilt as a 5.5″ border (maybe our “Tulip Tango”) or become an 6.5″ interlocking pattern-whichever you need.
One the same roll are 2 Clematis Borders or Sashings (2.5″ + 4″) to pair with our new “Clematis Arbor” Edge to Edge pattern.
It’s always nice to have a lovely Christmas pattern for that last minute quilt. You’ll find this interlocking 2 rows of 6″ easy and fast moving. It’s easy to adjust for the size of your quilt.
BUT, Poinsettia Fantasia now comes in a BIG 10 inch size. It’s a single interlocking row. Bigger means faster quilting! (We don’t keep many of these in stock, if it is all out, just let us know and we will special order it for you.)
Stephanie Dodson of Summerwind Studio created a beautiful Poinsettia Table Runner with this pattern. Read the delightful tale of how she stitched it. Click here to go to her blog.
What a lovely batik border. It reminds me of so many truly oriental batiks. Use these 2 patterns as borders or even for Edge 2 Edge quilting.
You might pair them with the new Java Batik Floral 10″ Edge 2 Edge. Watch for some blocks on the same theme.
Tonight a friend of mine from Indonesia came over and I showed her my new pattern. “Oh, the name of this flower in Java is Kembang Kenanga,” she exclaimed. How fun to know the real name and that it was recognizable! (It translates to Kenanga Flower. In Bali it is called Padma. Yes, all you Star Wars Fans – Padma was not a new name.)
Celebrate Americana! The birds and flags of Americana art make a perfect border for patriotic or Americana quilts. Included are a Willow corner and “Welcome Willow” 2-inch sashing/border and a tiny “Star n’ Bars” 1-inch border/sashing.
Laguna de Cancun 5″ roll pattern with 2″ Mayan Wave sashing
Laguna de Cancun comes from the Izapa Stele #25 with addition of a fish design from a pottery artifact and a turtle from Mayan hieroglyphs. Just like hotel murals on the Mayan Riviera, these stylized fish swim directly out of the Izapa Stele #25. Even the waves are part of the original design chiseled hundreds of years ago in Central America. Inspiration from a long pottery fish and hieroglyph turtle add variety to this easy pattern.
With Laguna de Cancun comes Mayan Wave, a flowing textile design found on painted vases and architectural trim of the period.
We’re letting this lovely pattern have a rest. We have only a few paper copies left, after that they will be special order only and will take more time to ship. It will continue to be available as a PDF. Cherry Minuet 3″ wide pattern. It’s perfect for your short-arm or domestic sewing machine. (this pattern actually has 3 rows, 3″ wide each) It will look cute accented by the Cherry Waltz Border.
2 Rows of 4 inch stitching make this pattern perfect for short-arm or domestic machines. Isn’t it great that 2 little rows make a big design?
Portico Blooms is a stylized flower found in Mayan textile decoration, Mayan hieroglyphs, and also as painted architectural décor on Aztec porches.
While we imagine bougainvillea spilling over the porch roofs in Central America, the ancient artisans painted these blooms along the pillars of these very porches and in their architectural murals. Although the design is hundreds of years old it complements bright modern piecing.
I may have used this little pattern more than any other. A sprinkling of pine goes with so many other patterns. Shown is a hodge-podge of a layout with possibilities for placing these little pinecones.
If you’re rarin’ to try them all you’d better get the Big Campout Set for 20% OFF the individual prices.
When planning the layout for stitching patterns and borders these geometric patterns help define space between the more organic designs. Whether you free-hand or use a pattern like this be sure to include them in your quilts.
Ming Sea is part of the Chinese Porcelain Series and designed to compliment the Oriental designs. Included are Ming Sea 6″ with two types of corners. Also, on the same roll is a delightful oriental cloud design called Mandarin Wind 4″ which can be used as Edge to Edge for a short-arm machine.
The design for Ming Sea was derived from the porcelain border on a plate of the Ming Dynasty. It looks in place with our other Chinese patterns as shown here.
4 Little Patterns 2 1/2″ ( Mice & Little Pumpkins) and 3″ Paper Plant & Seashells) on a 15″ roll pattern.
“4 Little Patterns” has the above 4 patterns on the same roll. They are compatible as sashing or borders for other MeadowLyon patterns such as Rainforest, Jungle, Fishy Business and Pumpkin Patch. You’ll find lots of uses for these minis!
These little Ferns are so versatile. They’re great for short-arm machines but can be used anywhere a small border is found. See our sample Floral Layout for ideas.
Several years ago I decided to make a quilt for an Indonesian friend. (See the whole story on the link to Indonesian Puppets) I decided to draw a 6″ pattern of foliage to separate the rows of puppets from each other. Since then I’ve used it for many things including 3 additional Indonesian puppet quilts. It also works well with both the Rainforest 11″ pictogram and Jungle 11″ pictogram. When I need just a little more to fill out a quilt, I use this very versatile 6″ pattern. It also works well as an Edge to Edge for mid-arm machines and is great for a simple border.
In the Doghouse 6″ border pattern with accompanying sashing patterns: Dog Bones 2″ and Pawprints 2 1/2″ It can serve as a border for the Dawgspictogram or can be used as E2E to cover an entire quilt.
This pattern is 6″ wide with no repeats.
The distinctive feature of a Pictogram is that it’s a pantograph with NO repeats. It’s a complete 12′ roll comprised of 4 panels of 3′ each, all “hooked” together. I’ve added a dotted line at each 36″ section. While they can be stacked up as shown in the picture, they can also be quilted like an E2E or B2B giving lots of pictorial subject matter to your quilt. See how I used it here: https://youtu.be/xFS3GfNbOmk
To avoid placing an animal or image on top of itself all the way down the quilt I recommend starting at a different 36″ division for each “pass.” After starting, continue quilting through as many sections as needed for that row. You won’t have to stop – the line is continuous. For a full sized quilt I might make 7-8 rows, starting at various sections of the panto.
Fishy Business 6″ border pattern with accompanying sashing pattern
This pattern is 6″ wide with no repeats. It has 4 panels of 3′ each.
It includes a 3″ Seashell sashing or border pattern, as well as the following designs:
Angel Fish, Balloon Fish, Beta, Blue and Yellow Snapper, Clown Fish, Damsel Fish, Golden Long-Nosed Butterfly Fish, Grouper, Lump Fish, Puffer Fish, Starfish, White Spotted Trigger Fish, Crab, Sea Horse, Turtle, Octopus, Mussels, Sea Urchin, and Scallop.
I’m always pleasantly surprised when I find quilts in a show that are quilted with one of my patterns. Here Patricia Barry uses Fishy Business Border in an eye-catching diagonal placement for her beautiful quilt Nautical Waves. (MQS 2009)
I was riding past El Dorado, KS when drawing this pattern. I thought the sketch looked like ornate gold jewelry and the name seemed to fit. Have fun gilding your next quilt with Spanish gold.
To repeat rows you must be able to re-adjust the laser light or shift the paper. To view the directions which are included on the paper roll, go to the TIPS section.
Cherry Waltz 4 1/2″ border and Cherry Waltz Corner
We’re going to let this lovely pattern have a rest. As soon as the current stock is gone, the paper format will be on “special order” only and may take a few days longer then usual.
