Description

Yes, I’m really into Mosaics this month. This is a primitive rendition of the colorful old mosaics found in South Asia.  I can’t wait to see how this looks over a modern, geometric quilt top.   I’d also like to stitch it on a red sari.

It’s roughly drawn and you’ll find line discrepancies from panel to panel.  It’s all part of the folk look.  14″ x 144.”  See the fabric I quilted it on.

“Bengali Mosaic” This was a piece of African Batik, from Ghana I believe. I purchased it from a friend, Laura Harmon in Utah. She imports African batiks for her shop “Harmony.” I quilted it with my own design, “Bengali Mosaic.” (Yes, even though I know the name is not African, but the images were perfect. Anyway, when I designed the pantograph I chose the name and could have just as easily called it African Mosaic.) I painted some of the sections with Shiva Paintstiks and am in the process of adding some embroidered accents. I created the tassels with a variegated yarn I thought set it off well. As I was working on it, my sister-in-law, an artist and newly returned missionary in Sierra Leone, suggested the border needed a touch of purple. I searched my stash and found a small piece of batik with all the “right” colors and added a small flange with it.
