Description

“Blazing trails across the years, Blessed honored Pioneers.”  I’ve long wanted to create a pattern honoring the brave men and women who forged across our continent.  Westward HO is the fruition of that dream.

This pattern is 11″ wide with no repeats. It has 4 panels of 44″ each (this pattern is 14 1/2′ long, much longer than our regular 12′ whole cloth patterns), and includes the following designs: friendly Native Americans (peace-pipe, rain dance, teepees etc.) a pony Express Rider, a Trapper with his travois, Covered Wagons, music and dance around the campfire, famous landmarks, Bison and Pronghorns, even my blind great-grandfather holding to the back of the wagon–all bound together within the spokes of a Wagon Wheel.

Westward Ho can be used for edge to edge quilting (without paint, the wheel is not strongly prominent), or as a 44”x 44” quilt center emphasizing the secondary wagon wheel  design.

To complete my quilt I created a border of plains animals “Great Plains on The Move.”  See the layout plan I used.

After finishing the Westward Ho quilt I bravely painted details with Paintstiks.  Read how!

This pattern is 11″ wide & 14 1/2′ long with no repeats.

The distinctive feature of a Pictogram is that it’s a pantograph with NO repeats.  It’s a complete panto roll, in this case comprised of 4 panels of 44′ each, all “hooked” together. I’ve added a dotted line at each 44″ section. While they can be stacked up as shown in the picture, they can also be quilted like an E2E or B2B giving lots of pictorial subject matter to your quilt.

If you’re stacking as an E2E, To avoid placing an animal or image on top of itself all the way down the quilt I recommend starting at a different section for each “pass.” After starting, continue quilting through as many sections as needed for that row. You won’t have to stop – the line is continuous. For a full sized quilt I might make 7-8 rows, starting at various sections of the panto.

For alignment help see the “Tips” section.
